How To Deal With A Clogged Shower Drain Caused By Hair

Posted on

If you have family members with long hair, chances are that you have a clogged shower drain quite frequently. Those long strands of hair tend to become tangled once they get into the drain, which prevents water from making its way through. It's a clog that is difficult to flush out by using water, and it may be deep enough that a hanger can't reach it. Here are a few tips for preventing and fixing a clogged shower drain due to hair.

Brush Hair Before Showering

Sometimes it is the simple solution that works the best. With so many loose hairs falling out when showering, consider making hair brushing part of a pre-shower routine every day. Just run a brush through your hair for a couple of minutes, and all that hair will get stuck in the brush rather than down the drain. You'll start to notice that your shower drain is becoming clogged less frequently than it was before.

Use a Drain Drainer

Brushing won't remove all of the stray hairs before you shower, which is why a drain can benefit from having a strainer installed on it. It's an inexpensive item that goes into the drain and will catch loose hairs before they go into the drain. Just make sure to clear out the strainer to keep the water flowing regularly. Drain strainers can either rest with the drainer going into the drain, or work like a suction cup that rest over the drain at the bottom of your shower. Either one will get the job done.

Snake the Drain Regularly

Instead of waiting for a drain to become clogged with hair, it is a good idea to actively clean the drain before the problem gets to the point where it needs it. You can buy a handheld sewer snake that you fish into the drain and crank the handle to turn the cable. It will cut through clogs caused by hair, helping it pass through to the sewer.

Velcro pad sewer snakes also do a great job of sticking to hair so that you can pull it out of the drain. They are an inexpensive product that can be thrown away when they stop being effective.

If you can't seem to get a drain unclogged due to hair, it is time to hire a drain cleaning expert to help. They can use commercial tools that will get rid of the toughest clogs.
